Les Ulis, France
Located some 30km south-west from Paris, Les Ulis is very different from Thetford. A former market garden area, the town shows very little of its former life as it was transformed in the late 1960s into a new town. Just as Thetford was transformed by the influx of residents from London, then so too was Les Ulis transformed in order to serve the growing needs of Paris. However, whereas Thetford cleared areas of woodland in order to create new housing estates, Les Ulis decided to reach for the sky instead. The high rise tower blocks of Les Ulis are now one of the most dominant features here on the relatively flat landscape of France. Meanwhile, the town's commercial centre has more than a passing resemblance to Thetford's own riverside shopping area due to the extensive use of concrete. However, it was because of this new town living that Thetford first forged civic links with Les Ulis back in 1966. Since then the town has grown steadily and now has a population of some 27,000, just slightly more than here in Thetford. LE MARCHE AUX ULIS
