Skawina, Poland
Thetford has had friendship links with Skawina in Poland for many years. In 2004 it was decided to formalise these links. The first part of the Twinning Agreement between Thetford and Skawina was signed on 11 November 2004 in Skawina, and the second part will be signed in Thetford in April 2005. Skawina is 15 km south of Kraków and is situated in the Lesser Poland Voivodship. It was founded in 1364 by Casimir the Great, the last Polish king of Piast family. It is the most populated commune in Kraków county with 41,415 inhabitants in the town and commune. From the 15th to the 17th centuries Skawina was a splendid and prosperous town due to the craftsmanship which developed in the area. Skawina is now an important and economically autonomous satellite of Kraków with a well-developed labour market, new investments, advanced economic transformation and a growing level of public services. Being only 15 minutes from the centre of Kraków it has direct access to national and international roads, railways and the Balice airport. Skawina’s long term development plans have for many years included social and economic development, including improved economic and social attractiveness of the community to encourage modern enterprise and the highest quality of life for its inhabitants. For relaxation, there is the Camena water facility, consisting of three indoor swimming pools, benches for an audience and a rehabilitation complex including a full range of kinetic rehabilitation. Other attractions include the Apostle Church, the Filial Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin Mary, the Holy Virgin Mary Ascension Church, the Holy Virgin Mary Church of Krzęcin, the St Laurent and Catherine Church of Radziszów, the Manors in Korabniki and Ochodza, the Haller clearing, Jurczyce, the Falcon Mansion, the market square and town hall. In addition to Thetford, Skawina has been twinned with Hürth in Germany since June 1996 and Turciańskie Teplice in the Slovak Republic since November 1999. |
